Email is one of the highest-ROI channels, but without proper UTM tracking, you can't measure its true impact. Here's how to set it up correctly.

For email campaigns, use these standard values:

  • utm_source: newsletter, email, or the specific email platform
  • utm_medium: email
  • utm_campaign: the specific campaign name
  • utm_content: the specific link or CTA

Automated vs. Manual Campaigns

For automated email flows (welcome series, abandoned cart), use a consistent naming pattern:

utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=welcome_series&utm_content=email_1_cta

For newsletters, include the date for easy filtering in GA4:

utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly_digest_2025_w06
